James T. Hyun is a seasoned trial attorney, Administrative Law Judge for Cook County, and Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, with over three decades of experience handling complex legal matters across criminal, civil, administrative, and commercial law.

Before founding Hyun Law Group, Mr. Hyun served nearly a decade as an Assistant State’s Attorney with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted serious felony cases including homicides, violent crimes, and complex quasi-criminal matters. He tried more than two dozen felony jury trials to verdict and was selected to serve in the Special Prosecutions Bureau, working alongside the U.S. Attorney’s Office on sensitive federal matters.

Since 2010, Mr. Hyun has presided as an Administrative Law Judge in Cook County, adjudicating civil, administrative, and regulatory cases involving taxation, zoning, environmental enforcement, and public safety. His dual experience as both prosecutor and judge gives him a rare, comprehensive perspective on litigation strategy, courtroom dynamics, and case resolution.

In addition to his judicial role, Mr. Hyun teaches Advanced Trial Advocacy and International Trial Advocacy at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and has served as a visiting professor at leading universities in Korea and China, teaching federal criminal law, international commercial transactions, and arbitration.

Mr. Hyun is a frequent lecturer, legal columnist, and community leader, has testified before the Illinois General Assembly on landmark legislation, and has been repeatedly recognized as an Illinois Super Lawyer from 2016 to 2025  and a Top Lawyer by Chicago Magazine for the past 10 years.  James has perfect 5.0 Avvo rating as reviewed by his clients and peers.
